The Words of the Wise are like Goads
The Iron Men of DPC have begun a Tuesday morning Breakfast & Bible Study, working our way through the book of Ecclesiastes...
The wisdom literature of the Bible is so fascinating... it's not like studying the law or a letter or a narrative or a poem or a prayer or even a prophet... it's wisdom. It's going to take sustained effort and time and reflection and repeated readings (even better: repeated readings in a community of students) to really "get" what it's saying.
It's going to take much more than just a surface reading & a superficial "jab" at the point being made. But the rewards of having matured through many reflections on the wisdom literature of the Bible are deep and rich.
Consider how Ecclesiastes ends: "Besides being wise, the Teacher also taught the people knowledge, weighing and studying and arranging many proverbs with great care. The Teacher sought to find words of delight, and uprightly he wrote words of truth. The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings; they are given by one Shepherd. My son, beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh. The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil."
Prepare to be goaded...
