Kooistra on Pastoral Ministry

Paul Kooistra was with us over the weekend (see the post below), and it was great to get to know him a little bit. I'm still thinking through all the implications of one comment that he made in particular -- and the funny thing is that it wasn't made in any of the wonderful sermons he preached for us. It was said in a personal conversation. But it wasn't even said to me. I just overheard him saying it to someone else.

In referring to pastors who spend all of their time in their study surrounding themselves with great books (which is surely an easy trap for book-loving pastors to fall into), Dr. Kooistra said this:

"The Bible is not your job. The Bible is your tool. People are your job."

This reminds me of a definition for "busyness" that I once heard someone else share with a group of pastors: "Often 'busyness' is essentially laziness. It's working on the easy things instead of the hard thing."
